Convicted Rapist’s Mother Accepts Capital Punishment

Sanjay Roy’s mother has expressed her acceptance of capital punishment for her son, who was convicted of raping and murdering an on-duty medic at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital last year. The 70-year-old woman, who has three daughters, said she would “cry alone” but accept the punishment as destiny if the court decides to hang him.

Roy’s mother believes that being a woman and a mother herself gives her an understanding of the victim’s family’s pain. She had been reticent to speak to the media after the court conviction on January 18, but now expressed her willingness to accept her son’s punishment.

Roy’s sister has also stated that the law should take its course and there are no plans to challenge the order in any court. The family is trying to move forward from the stigma caused by Sanjay’s arrest and conviction.

The quantum of Roy’s punishment will be announced on January 20, with a minimum sentence of life imprisonment and a maximum of capital punishment.
