Comedian Dave Chappelle made his fourth appearance as host of Saturday Night Live (SNL) on January 18, sparking controversy with a provocative monologue. The 51-year-old opened the show by discussing the California wildfires, which have been deemed the most expensive tragedy in US history. Chappelle also weighed in on conspiracy theories surrounding the fires and made a reference to Luigi Mangione, who was accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Chappelle later addressed his celebrity friends, including Sean “Diddy” Combs, by comparing fame to storming Normandy beaches during World War II. He joked about being excluded from parties hosted by Combs due to his appearance, which he claimed would be a harsh revelation if discovered through media reports.
The comedian also turned his attention to Donald Trump ahead of his Inauguration Day on January 20, stating that “the presidency is no place for petty people.” Chappelle urged Trump to have empathy for displaced people and reminded him to prioritize humanity. With this appearance, Chappelle is now just one hosting gig away from joining the show’s Five-Timers Club.
Chappelle has previously received Emmy awards for his previous SNL hosting gigs in 2021 and 2017. His latest turn hosting SNL came after a two-year hiatus since his last appearance in November 2022. Chappelle’s Netflix special, The Closer, was criticized for its jokes targeting the LGBTQ+ community in 2021, but his new special, Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer, is currently nominated for a Grammy Award for best comedy album.
Rapper GloRilla made her SNL debut alongside Chappelle on January 18. Next week, Timothée Chalamet will return to Studio 8H as host and musical guest, performing Bob Dylan hits from his biopic A Complete Unknown.
