Black Notes Project Returns to Charlotte with Jazz Tribute to Prince

The Black Notes Project, a music festival founded by Amy Carleton and Michael Kitchen, is returning to Uptown Charlotte on January 24th. The two-day event will feature a range of jazz performances and activities that celebrate the genre’s rich history and innovation.

The festival will take place across multiple venues, including Booth Playhouse, Knight Theater, and the Mint Museum Uptown. Highlights include a tribute to Prince at Booth Playhouse, a performance exploring “the evolution of jazz” at Knight Theater, and a free screening of the documentary “Trap Jazz” at the Mint Museum Uptown.

“We are trying to give people a rich experience, so you can come away with a deep understanding of the roots and innovations of jazz,” said Carleton, who holds a Ph.D. in English and lectures at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “Black history is American history. Black music is American music.”

The festival’s founders aim to create an inclusive experience that celebrates both local and national artists. This year’s event will feature performances by Sainted Trap Choir of Charlotte and Trap Jazz from Atlanta, as well as a family-friendly show with the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra.

The Black Notes Project was first launched in January 2024, and its second installment has been designed to build on the success of last year’s festival. With its focus on jazz, this event promises to be an exciting and educational experience for music lovers in Charlotte.
