Bangladeshi Man Arrested for Stabbing Saif Ali Khan in Mumbai Home Break-In

A 30-year-old Bangladeshi national, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, has confessed to stabbing actor Saif Ali Khan after breaking into his house in Mumbai. The attack occurred on Thursday during a failed burglary bid.

Shehzad was arrested from near Hiranandani Estate in Kasarvadavali, Thane, about 35 km from Mr. Khan’s home in Bandra. He was traced to a labour camp in a forested area after police received information from a labour contractor.

When questioned by police, Shehzad admitted to the crime, saying “haan, maine hi kiya hai” (yes, I did it). The accused had been living in Mumbai for four months and had changed his name to Bijoy Das.

Mr. Khan suffered grievous injuries after being stabbed six times during the attack. Doctors removed a 2.5-inch piece of broken knife from his spine during emergency surgery.

The police investigation revealed that Shehzad demanded Rs 1 crore from Mr. Khan before the attack. The couple’s nurse, who first encountered the intruder, corroborated the details provided by Kareena Kapoor Khan in her statement to the police.

Multiple teams of police and the crime branch worked together to track down the suspect based on CCTV footage and other leads. A carpenter was initially detained for resembling the suspect’s image but was later released after being cleared of any involvement.

Shehzad is currently remanded in five-day police custody.
