Kohl’s Department Store will close over two dozen stores across the country by April as part of its transformation process to address financial struggles. The company has announced that it will close 27 “underperforming” stores, but has not revealed any plans to close locations in North Carolina.
According to a statement from CEO Tom Kingsbury, the decision is necessary to support the health and future of the business for customers and employees. The closure affects several states, including Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Kohl’s has 31 stores in North Carolina, with one location in Asheville. However, no closures have been announced for the state. The company’s financial struggles include a 8.8% decrease in net sales to $3.5 billion, a 9.3% decline in comparable sales, and an operating income drop of $98 million.
The closure is part of the company’s long-term growth strategy, which aims to reverse sales declines. CEO Kingsbury has expressed dissatisfaction with the company’s performance, stating that “aggressive action” will be taken to address the issue. Employees have been informed of the closures and offered a competitive severance package or the opportunity to apply for open roles at other Kohl’s locations.
