Starbucks Reverses Open-Door Policy Amid Safety Concerns

Starbucks has reversed a policy that allowed anyone to enter its stores without buying something, citing concerns over safety and customer comfort. The new code of conduct, set to be implemented in all North American company-owned stores, bans discriminatory behavior, smoking, vaping, drug use, panhandling, and drinking outside the store.

The move comes after two years since Starbucks introduced an open-door policy following a high-profile arrest of two Black men at one of its Philadelphia stores. The incident sparked widespread criticism, with some arguing that the company was being too lenient on unruly customers.

However, employees and customers have reported numerous incidents of unruly behavior in stores, including drug use and violence, prompting the company to take action. In 2022, Starbucks closed 16 stores nationwide due to repeated safety issues.

Under the new policy, violators will be asked to leave, and the store may call law enforcement if necessary. Employees will receive training on enforcing the new rules, which aim to prioritize paying customers while ensuring a comfortable environment for everyone.
