Sony’s R-rated buddy comedy “One of Them Days” opened at No. 2, earning $11.6 million from 2,675 North American venues over the weekend, and is shaping up to be a major commercial win for the studio. The film, starring Keke Palmer and SZA, has received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, with an “A-” on CinemaScore and 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In contrast, Universal’s “Wolf Man” reboot debuted below forecasts, taking in $10.5 million from 3,354 theaters over the weekend. The horror remake was met with a lukewarm response from critics and audiences, earning a “C-” grade on CinemaScore and 53% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The box office for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend was slower than expected, with total grosses of around $100 million across all films in theaters. Sony’s success with “One of Them Days” may be attributed to its well-reviewed and affordable production budget, which allowed it to stay competitive in a crowded market.
While “Wolf Man” stumbled internationally, bringing in just $4.83 million from 53 overseas markets, “One of Them Days” is poised to benefit from word-of-mouth and positive reviews. The film’s success has also been praised by industry expert David A. Gross, who notes that the three-day figure is double the average for the genre.
In other news, Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” placed fourth with $8.6 million over the traditional weekend, while Lionsgate’s “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” rounded out the top five with $6.6 million. The underperforming musical biopic “Better Man” continues to struggle, suffering a 76% collapse in its second weekend of release.
Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” remains the reigning champion, taking in $11.9 million from 3,555 cinemas over the weekend and an estimated $15.5 million through Monday. The film has enjoyed a reversal in theatrical fortunes since its softer start ahead of Christmastime, grossing $209.8 million domestically and $588.4 million globally to date.
Note: “Moana 2” crossed the billion-dollar mark globally with its latest box office milestone.
