A ski lift collapse at a resort in northern Spain has left dozens of people injured and eight more trapped on the chairlift. Around 80 people remain stranded, with nine suffering serious injuries and eight others having moderate injuries.
The cause of the accident is still unknown. A witness described the scene as “chaotic,” saying that the cable had snapped, sending chairs bouncing and people flying off. Several helicopters are currently rescuing those stuck on the lift and transporting injured skiers to nearby hospitals.
The Astún ski resort, located near the French border in the Pyrenees mountains, was popular among Spanish skiers before the accident occurred. Authorities have declined to comment on whether foreigners were involved.
