Bob Dylan’s ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ Lyrics Sell for $508,000

A rare typewritten draft of Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” lyrics sold for $508,000 at a Julien’s Auctions event in Nashville. The item, which includes the original “crumped false starts,” was found in a waste basket by late rock journalist Al Aronowitz after Dylan left his New Jersey home in 1964. Aronowitz had previously mentioned finding the draft but couldn’t locate it for years until his family searched through the archives.

The sale, part of an auction featuring 60 Dylan items from Aronowitz’s collection, also included a Fender Telecaster owned by Dylan ($222,250), signed lyrics for “Blowin’ in the Wind” ($44,450), and an original oil painting by Dylan from 1968 ($260,000). The total value of the Aronowitz archive was $1.5 million.
