Comedian Dave Chappelle shared a heartfelt message during his opening monologue on the latest episode of “Saturday Night Live.” The comedian joked about Sean “Diddy” Combs and other topics before sharing a moving story about a time when late President Jimmy Carter inspired him.
Chappelle recounted a visit to Israel where Carter, despite facing security warnings, chose to meet with Palestinians, who cheered his presence. The image of the former president walking alone with minimal security evoked tears in Chappelle’s eyes and led him to praise Carter as a great man.
As he addressed President-elect Donald Trump directly, Chappelle urged him to remember that being a leader requires empathy and humanity, especially when dealing with displaced people. He warned Trump not to forget his humanity and to have compassion for those affected by disasters such as the Pacific Palisades wildfires.
Chappelle’s message was met with cheers from the audience, who were initially entertained by jokes about Combs’ parties and Chalamet’s hosting gig on next week’s episode of SNL.
