The Internet Archive has resumed operations in a read-only state after a cyberattack and data breach brought down its digital library and Wayback Machine last week. A DDoS attack and database theft are believed to be the causes of the outage, with 31 million unique email accounts compromised.
Founder Brewster Kahle announced that users can access the Wayback Machine’s archived content, including over 916 billion web pages, but cannot currently capture new web pages into the archive. The site has been gradually restored in recent days, with staff working to strengthen its defenses against future attacks.
A pop-up message from a hacker falsely claimed a “catastrophic security breach” had occurred, while Have I Been Pwned confirmed that email addresses, hashed passwords, and other internal data were stolen. Google’s cached pages links, which became available on the Wayback Machine last week, are now unavailable due to the outage.
