LSU’s former offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock expressed no surprise at the stellar rookie season of quarterback Jayden Daniels, who led the Washington Commanders to their first NFC championship game appearance since 1991. Daniels’ performance was a result of meticulous preparation and attention to detail, which Denbrock witnessed firsthand during his two seasons at LSU.
Denbrock now works with Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard, who praises the coach for giving him significant freedom on the field. The Irish offense has been successful despite lacking a dynamic passing attack, thanks in part to Denbrock’s ability to adapt the scheme around Leonard and the team’s strong running game.
However, Ohio State star Jeremiah Smith is skeptical about Notre Dame’s defensive strategy, which relies heavily on man-to-man coverage that has struggled against the Buckeyes’ talented wide receivers. The Fighting Irish have used this approach 80% of the time, but Smith believes they will need to adjust if they want to compete with Ohio State.
Notre Dame may need to make adjustments after the injury of left tackle Anthonie Knapp. Redshirt freshman Charles Jagusah could start at left tackle for the first time this season, replacing injured right guard Rocco Spindler.
