Global Trust Barometer Reveals Growing Polarization and Grievance

A recent study by Edelman found that people worldwide feel increasingly frustrated with institutions and systems. The annual survey, which polled over 32,000 people in 28 countries, revealed a shift away from polarization towards “aggressive advocacy for self-interest.” This sentiment was reinforced by the rise of populist candidates in elections.

Many respondents reported feeling discriminated against, with two-thirds saying they face bias. Age and political affiliation played little role in this perception, as both left-leaning and right-leaning individuals expressed grievances. The 55+ age group also showed high levels of discontent, along with Gen Z.

Respondents were worried about job loss due to automation and globalization, with economic fears playing a significant role. Only one-third believed the next generation would be better off economically. A mass-class divide was noted by CEO Richard Edelman, who emphasized the need to restore economic optimism.

The study found that young people are particularly aggressive in their advocacy for change, with 31% of Gen Z respondents believing violence could be a legitimate means to effect change. The survey also highlighted growing distrust of institutions and news sources, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish between reliable information and disinformation.
