A ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas has led to the release of 90 Palestinian prisoners, including women and minors, but human rights groups say many were arrested for expressing support for Gaza or participating in protests against Israeli actions.
The deal, which aims to end the 15-month war in Gaza, allows for the release of hundreds of Palestinians held in Israeli jails. However, critics argue that the imprisonment system is riddled with flaws and often targets Palestinian men disproportionately.
Among those released on Sunday was Latifa Misha’sha, who had been arrested for posting a picture supporting Gaza on Instagram. She lost over 6 kilograms during her detention and was charged with incitement.
Shatha Jarabaa, another released prisoner, said she was arrested and held in poor conditions, with limited access to basic necessities like food and clothes. Her lawyer accused the Israeli authorities of using social media posts as a pretext for arrest.
Human rights groups have documented widespread abuse and mistreatment of Palestinians by Israeli prison officials, including torture, extreme hunger, and humiliation.
The Israeli Prison Service denies any wrongdoing, claiming that all prisoners are detained according to the law and that basic rights are fully applied. However, critics say the system is designed to keep Palestinians under control and silence opposition voices.
As part of the ceasefire deal, hundreds of Palestinians will be permanently exiled and deported to Turkey, Qatar, or Algeria. The list of released prisoners includes many serving life sentences for conducting or participating in deadly attacks against Israelis.
The controversy over prison conditions highlights the need for reform and accountability in Israel’s detention system.
