Brazilian Police Arrest Hacker Behind $2.9 Billion Record Leak

Brazilian Federal Police have arrested a hacker linked to a massive data breach that leaked 2.9 billion records, including sensitive personal information like Social Security numbers. The leak was sold on the dark web in April by an entity claiming to be USDoD.

The hacker was allegedly involved in selling federal police data and boasted about revealing the personal details of 80,000 InfraGard program members. Researchers have created a tool to search the leaked records, which contain around 272 million unique SSNs and up to 600 million phone numbers.

The company behind the leak, National Public Data, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this month as it faces lawsuits and potential penalties. The police are continuing to investigate if the hacker was involved in further breaches.
