Russia Hit by Large Drone Attacks from Ukraine

Russia’s air transport agency restricted flights at three airports in western regions on Sunday night after Ukrainian drones forced takeoffs. The attacks, which began around 9 pm local time, targeted industrial facilities in the Tatarstan region, with authorities claiming all drones were neutralized without casualties.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported shooting down 30 Ukrainian drones over the weekend, with another drone shot down over the Republic of Tatarstan. Meanwhile, Ukraine claimed to have launched 141 drones and one ballistic missile into Russia on Sunday night.

Flights at the Kazan International Airport and Begishevo Airport were restricted temporarily due to concerns for civil aircraft safety. The restrictions were lifted around four hours later. Authorities also reported drone debris causing a fire in an industrial site in Kaluga region.

Russia’s Bryansk governor Alexander Bogomaz said air defenses shot down four U.S.-made HIMARS missiles and 14 drones over the region on Sunday night, with no casualties or damage reported. Ukraine’s air force, however, claimed to have downed 93 Ukrainian attack UAVs, with another 47 lost in flight.

The attacks on Russia’s military industrial hub come as tensions between the two countries remain high following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
