A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern Taiwan’s Chiayi County early Tuesday morning, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). The quake occurred at 12:17 a.m. and had its epicenter 37.9 kilometers southeast of Chiayi County Hall, at a depth of 9.7 km.
The intensity of the quake was highest in Chiayi County, measuring a 6 on Taiwan’s 7-tier scale. Neighboring Tainan City and Kaohsiung City also experienced significant shaking, with intensities measured at 5. The CWA reported these findings, which are crucial for assessing the impact of the seismic event.
