Ohio State’s football team has secured its ninth national championship title, adding another piece of hardware to the program’s storied collection. The Buckeyes defeated Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff national championship game on Monday night, capping off a long road through the 12-team playoff.
Under head coach Ryan Day, Ohio State won its first championship in over a decade. While some titles may be disputed due to the way national champions were selected prior to the implementation of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) in 1998, this latest victory brings the Buckeyes’ total to nine.
Historically, Ohio State has been one of the most successful programs in college football history, with nine national championships recognized by the NCAA. The team’s previous titles came under coaches Paul Brown and Woody Hayes, as well as Jim Tressel, Urban Meyer, and Ryan Day. Despite some disputed victories, Ohio State now claims a share of sixth place in terms of total national championships won.
The Buckeyes’ victory brings them into a tie with Southern California for the most national championships recognized by the NCAA, currently sitting at nine titles.
