Grammy-winner Nelly has addressed criticism over his decision to perform at President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration ball, stating it was a gesture of respect for the office rather than politics.
In a YouTube livestream with fellow rapper Willie D on Saturday night, Nelly defended his participation in the Jan. 20 festivities, saying he isn’t trying to sway voters’ opinions. The “Hot in Herre” rapper emphasized that this is not a campaign event and that performing doesn’t mean agreeing with Trump’s policies.
Nelly shared that having multiple family members who served in the U.S. military inspired his decision, as well as an honor for being asked to perform for the president of the United States. He expressed disappointment that fans were criticizing his choice, saying it shouldn’t be about politics but about respecting the office.
The rapper reiterated that he supports the president regardless of their policies and believes performing is a separate act from voting. Nelly’s statement comes amid backlash for several high-profile artists participating in the inauguration events.
