Thailand Marks Milestone in LGBTQ+ Rights with Marriage Equality Law

Same-sex couples in Thailand are celebrating a major milestone as the country’s marriage equality law takes effect on Thursday. This move makes Thailand only the third place in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, where same-sex couples can legally register their marriages.

The law has been years in the making, with the government led by the Pheu Thai party making it one of its main goals after coming to power in 2023. The country’s landmark bill was officially written into law on September 24, after being endorsed by King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

Seven same-sex couples spoke with The Associated Press about their hopes and expectations for the new law. Many expressed relief that they can finally have their relationships legally recognized, citing improvements in areas such as healthcare access and protection from discrimination.

“This law doesn’t only equate life,” said Jakrapob Penkair, 57, a former Prime Minister’s Office minister. “It is life! With this one sentence, lost or wasted lives have been rescued.”

For many, the new law marks a significant step towards equality and acceptance in Thai society, which has historically had conservative values that have made it difficult for LGBTQ+ individuals to navigate everyday life.

The country will host a grand celebration in central Bangkok on the first day of the law’s implementation to welcome hundreds of same-sex couples who plan to register their marriages.
