Women are needlessly suffering agonizing pain during cervical screening tests due to a lack of awareness about simple adjustments that can make the procedure more comfortable, experts have warned.
A recent poll by The Eve Appeal found that as few as one in ten women are aware they can ask their NHS healthcare professional for changes such as lubrication, a smaller speculum, or allowing themselves to insert the tool. However, these adjustments can significantly ease discomfort and pain during the test.
The screening, which tests for human papillomavirus (HPV), is thought to save about 5,000 lives every year in the UK. Despite its life-saving benefits, many women are avoiding their appointments due to fear of discomfort and embarrassment, with some not even knowing they have the right to request changes.
A survey of over 1,100 women found that 56% were unaware they could ask the doctor or nurse to stop during the test if needed, while 77% didn’t know they could request a smaller speculum. Only 11% of respondents knew about the option to be in a different position for their screening test.
Experts stress that these adjustments can make a significant difference in comfort and pain levels. Dr Sue Mann, NHS national clinical director for women’s health, advises women to ask for more time for their appointment, the smallest speculum, or someone else in the room for support if needed.
The Eve Appeal CEO Athena Lamnisos emphasized that raising awareness about these simple adjustments can potentially “save lives” by encouraging those who have missed their screening appointments or are putting them off to take action. GPs and healthcare professionals are also urging women to attend their cervical screening appointments and discuss any concerns they may have.
