The Sodality of Christian Life (SCV) announced on Monday that Pope Francis has decided to dissolve the society without providing further details about the process.
The move comes after a leaked statement by Infovaticana, which claimed Cardinal Gianfranco Ghirlanda had informed members gathered for the general assembly in Aparecida, Brazil, of the dissolution. The SCV denied that Ghirlanda was involved in leaking the information, stating it came from two members who broke confidentiality.
The society was founded in 1971 in Lima, Peru, and has presence in several countries. The dissolution is reportedly linked to the founder’s immorality, which led to his expulsion by Pope Francis in August 2024.
Cardinal Ghirlanda, a Vatican consultant, had been tasked with revising the SCV’s constitutions in 2019. A special mission was sent to Peru in 2023 to investigate allegations against Sodalitium members.
The SCV has disassociated itself from the leaked news and only recognizes official communications.
