Republican Representative Elise Stefanik is defending her nomination to serve as the US ambassador to the United Nations, touting it as a “watershed moment” against antisemitism in colleges and universities. During a Senate committee hearing, Stefanik claimed that her oversight work led to the most viewed testimony in history, exposing “antisemitic rot” on campuses.
The controversy began last year when protesters flooded college campuses nationwide, protesting the war in Israel and spiking instances of antisemitism. Stefanik had repeatedly grilled college leaders over their handling of the issue, with her alma mater Harvard being one of the targets.
In December 2023, Stefanik questioned Ivy League college administrators from Penn and Harvard about whether “calling for the genocide of Jews” violates school conduct rules. The administrators responded ambiguously, leading to a resignation from both presidents shortly after.
Stefanik plans to push Trump’s “America First” agenda at the UN, stating that she will ensure it serves the interests of the American people. President Trump nominated Stefanik to serve as ambassador to the U.N., citing her strong stance on promoting peace and security around the globe.
