ABC Meteorologist James Spann Speaks Out on Layoffs

ABC 33/40 meteorologist James Spann has spoken out about the recent layoffs at Allen Media Broadcasting, where local weather coverage will be replaced with The Weather Channel’s services nationwide. Spann expressed empathy for those who lost their jobs but also feels positive about the future of the industry.

The company operates 27 broadcast television stations in 21 U.S. markets and plans to use “local weather coverage powered by The Weather Channel” across the country. This move has sparked concerns among meteorologists, with some feeling like they are losing a part of their family.

Spann acknowledged that there will be short-term pain but believes that the industry will benefit from more efficient ways to deliver products and services. He notes that the audience for traditional TV broadcasts is shrinking and that it’s time to adapt to new platforms and consumption habits.

The veteran meteorologist, who started in the industry in 1978, has seen many changes over the years. Spann believes that a new generation of meteorologists emerging from college will help build a new model for the industry. He emphasizes the importance of building one’s own brand on social media, like TikTok.

However, Spann also highlighted the challenges of providing live tornado coverage without understanding an area’s geography and microclimate. “Warnings aren’t just technology, they are a social process,” said meteorologist Kim Klockow-McClain.

A change.org petition has been started in Tupelo, Mississippi, to stop layoffs at WTVA, with over 32,000 signatures. The petition expresses concerns that replacing local meteorologists with outsourced teams may lead to loss of trust and confidence in the community during severe weather events.
