Most Smartphones Fail to Catch Phishing Attacks

Phishing attacks are the most common security issue for consumers, with 24% of users reporting they have been targeted by such scams. A recent study by Omdia found that leading smartphones from top manufacturers, including Apple and Google, fail to detect several types of common phishing attacks.

The study surveyed over 1,500 smartphone users across 13 countries and found that anti-phishing features were the most important security feature for consumers. However, even devices with advanced anti-phishing protection, such as Samsung’s Galaxy S24 and Google’s Pixel 9 Pro, failed to catch all phishing attempts.

Several smartphones, including Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro and other premium Android devices from Honor, Xiaomi, and OnePlus, lack essential security features like voice call protection. These missing features leave users vulnerable to simulated spam calls and text messages with malicious links.

While some devices did detect and warn against phishing emails, the study highlights the growing threat of phishing attacks and the need for manufacturers to improve their baseline anti-phishing protection. Experts recommend that smartphone manufacturers should provide more effective phishing protection capabilities and awareness activities to help consumers be vigilant.

The lack of effective security protections on mobile devices is eroding consumer trust, with 73% of users reporting they have reduced trust in a brand after a security issue. As the threat of phishing attacks continues to rise, it’s essential for manufacturers to prioritize security and provide robust protection mechanisms to safeguard consumers’ personal information.
