President Trump has issued orders to slow down the transition to electric vehicles, putting Massachusetts at risk of losing $63 million in federal subsidies. The state had planned to use these funds to build EV chargers along major highways, but it appears no funding was awarded.
Massachusetts is one of the slower states to award funding from the 2021 infrastructure law, which allocated $5 billion for the EV charging network. Despite years of planning and negotiations, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has yet to award any dollars from the program.
Private operators have added hundreds of charging stations in recent years, but the subsidies were aimed at filling gaps in the network, particularly in rural or low-income areas that may not be attractive to private sector investment. A survey found that census tracts with higher Black populations had fewer car chargers.
