However, experts say the amount of glucose burned during this process is unlikely to lead to significant weight loss.

Dr. Akira Takahashi, a physician in Japan, conducted the study, which found that carbonated water increases alkalinity in red blood cells, accelerating glucose consumption. However, Keith Frayn, a professor at the University of Oxford, notes that red blood cells cannot fully “burn” glucose and it will be recycled by the liver.

While sparkling water may not lead to significant weight loss, it can still contribute to overall health benefits. Drinking water before meals has been shown to aid in weight loss, and replacing diet beverages with water can also benefit. Registered dietitian Lori Welstead suggests that sparkling water can increase satiety and help with digestion, but warns against overconsumption of added sugars.
