Actress Pauline Quirke has been diagnosed with dementia and will be stepping away from acting due to her diagnosis. The 65-year-old star, best known for her role in the hit sitcom Birds Of A Feather as Sharon Theodopolopodous opposite Linda Robson’s character Tracey, made the announcement through a statement.
Quirke had previously revealed her diagnosis in 2021, but it is now confirmed that she will be stepping back from her professional and commercial duties. Her husband Steve Sheen said they are “deeply grateful” for support from peers, the public, and staff at PQA Academy of Performing Arts.
The family has pledged future support to Alzheimer’s Research UK and plans to raise funds for research and awareness of dementia. Quirke’s diagnosis comes as one in two people will be directly affected by dementia, either through developing it or caring for someone with the condition.
Quirke’s career spans over 50 years, with numerous TV and film productions under her belt, including Broadchurch, Carrie’s War, and Emmerdale. She has won several awards, including a British Comedy Award in 1990 and an MBE in 2022 for her work with young people.
