The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has defended Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s “awkward” gesture during a recent celebratory event, stating that it was not a Nazi salute. The gesture sparked outrage among some critics, with Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) accusing Musk of making a Heil Hitler salute behind the Presidential seal.
The ADL wrote in a post on Musk’s social platform X: “This is a delicate moment. It’s a new day and yet so many are on edge. Our politics are inflamed, and social media only adds to the anxiety.” The organization acknowledged that some people may have misinterpreted Musk’s gesture, but emphasized that it was not meant as a Nazi salute.
Musk had extended his right arm across his chest in an unusual manner, which sparked speculation about its meaning. However, he claimed that the gesture was intended to emphasize his message of support for the crowd. The ADL urged people to give each other “a bit of grace” and take a step back from the animosity.
The defense of Musk by the ADL has been met with criticism from progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who accused the organization of losing credibility. However, the ADL maintains its stance that the gesture was not intended to be anti-Semitic.
