Nikki Haley’s successor, Elise Stefanik, has pledged to push for a more aligned United Nations system with US interests. During her Senate confirmation hearing, Stefanik stated that she would evaluate which UN agencies to fund and potentially cut ties with those deemed “antisemitic” or engaging in fraud, corruption, or terrorism.
The Republican nominee also vowed to take a tougher stance on Iran, claiming the country’s nuclear program has not been successfully curbed since the US withdrew from the 2015 agreement. Stefanik’s views align with former President Donald Trump’s stance, who had proposed annexing parts of the West Bank and lifting sanctions against extremist settlers.
Stefanik also expressed support for certain UN agencies, such as the World Food Program and UNICEF, but would cut funding to others, including UNRWA and UNIFIL. Her comments sparked concerns about potential US withdrawal from key international organizations, including the World Health Organization and the Paris climate accord.
