The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to a multi-year contract extension with coach Kevin O’Connell. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the extension locks in one of the NFL’s top young head coaches. O’Connell was facing uncertainty after the 2023 season when owners Zygi and Mark Wilf opted against extending his contract.
Despite this, O’Connell expressed his desire to remain with the team earlier this month, saying he “loves our ownership.” He also met with the Wilfs last week and stated that he wanted to continue leading the Vikings.
O’Connell, 39, has a strong track record as an offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams before joining the Vikings in 2022. His 34-17 regular season record includes two playoff appearances and multiple 13-win seasons. The team will entrust him with developing J.J. McCarthy, their No. 10 pick from last year’s draft.
The extension is seen as a major coup for the Wilfs, who praised O’Connell’s leadership and innovative approach to the game. “Kevin is exactly who we believed him to be,” said Mark Wilf. “He has helped establish a culture that positions us for sustained success.”
