European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has pushed back against US President Donald Trump’s claim that Europe lags behind the US in aid for Ukraine, insisting that the bloc must have a seat at the table during peace talks. According to Kallas, Europe is actually the largest contributor to Ukraine, with over 134 billion euros donated.
Kallas stated, “By my account, we have given more than 134 billion euros to Ukraine. That makes us the biggest international donor.” She emphasized that Europe’s inclusion in any negotiations or agreements between Russia and Ukraine is crucial, as “nothing about Europe without Europe” is a key principle here.
The EU chief expressed optimism about reaching agreement on keeping sanctions on Russia intact before they expire at the end of the month. However, Hungary has declined to support renewal, citing the need for consultation with the Trump administration first.
Kallas also noted that EU officials are exploring ways to utilize frozen Russian assets within the bloc to aid Ukraine further. The bloc currently uses profits from these assets to support Ukraine but has not used them themselves.
