Kamala Harris Appearances on SNL Spark Debate Over Portrayal

Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) just days before the presidential election, playing herself as Maya Rudolph’s mirror image in the show’s final episode. The sketch featured Harris and Rudolph sitting across from each other with identical outfits, where they exchanged cheers from the audience.

Harris was hoping to generate buzz and appeal to a nationwide audience with her appearance on NBC’s sketch comedy show. She had left Charlotte, North Carolina, and was scheduled to head to Detroit after appearing on the show.

The Democratic nominee took a brief break from campaigning in battleground states to join the “SNL” cast for the live airing at 11:30 pm ET. Harris’s team confirmed her appearance just moments before the show went live, with little notice given to the audience or other participants.

Host John Mulaney and musical guest Chappell Roan shifted the focus away from politics in their performances. Roan sang her hit song “Pink Pony Club” on an all-pink set and made no remarks. Sen. Tim Kaine also appeared in a game-show sketch where contestants struggled to remember his name despite being Hillary Clinton’s running mate.

Rudolph first played Harris on the show in 2019, earning critical acclaim from both Harris herself and others. Fellow former cast member Andy Samberg reappeared as Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, while stand-up comic Jim Gaffigan played Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Harris praised Rudolph’s performance last month on ABC’s “The View,” saying she was so good that she got everything right, including the suit and jewelry. However, Trump’s senior adviser Jason Miller expressed surprise at Harris appearing on SNL given her unflattering portrayal.
