The Sun newspaper has agreed to pay substantial damages and issue an apology to Prince Harry, ending a long-standing legal dispute over alleged unlawful intrusion into his private life.
The Duke of Sussex had accused journalists and private investigators employed by News Group Newspapers (NGN) of using illegal methods such as tapping his phone and bugging his car to access his personal information.
NGN has acknowledged “serious intrusion” by The Sun between 1996 and 2011, admitting incidents of unlawful activity carried out by private investigators. The company also apologized for the distress caused to Harry through extensive coverage and serious intrusion into his mother Princess Diana’s private life.
Harry had previously suggested tabloid newspapers played a role in his mother’s death, claiming that they forced him away from the Royal family last year. He resolved another legal dispute with Mirror Group Newspapers after evidence showed they obtained private details illegally between 1996 and 2010.
The settlements have cost NGN over £10 million in payouts and legal fees. Overall, the publisher has spent upwards of £1 billion in damages and costs related to phone hacking and privacy violations.
