The Las Vegas Raiders are finalizing a deal to hire Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager John Spytek as their new general manager. Spytek, 44, will be the team’s fifth GM since relocating to Las Vegas in 2020.
Spytek, who worked with top-level executives and coaches including Jason Licht and Andy Reid, takes over the reins from outgoing GM Mike Mayock. His first assignment will be hiring a new head coach, with candidates including Pete Carroll, Ron Rivera, Robert Saleh, Vance Joseph, Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn, and Todd Monken.
The team’s owner Mark Davis expressed concerns about pairing a rookie GM with a rookie coach, citing his past experiences with quarterbacks Tom Brady and Kirk Cousins. Spytek inherits a strong roster, including a first-team All-Pro tight end in Brock Bowers, but faces challenges at quarterback and running back.
Spytek’s new role also comes with significant salary cap space, estimated to be over $108 million. The team holds the No. 6 draft pick and an additional third-rounder from the Davante Adams trade. With his extensive NFL experience and network of connections, Spytek is well-equipped to address the team’s needs in free agency and the upcoming draft.
