Mittens the Cat Makes Three Flights Between Two Continents in 24 Hours

Mittens the cat has clocked up extra air miles after flying between New Zealand and Australia three times in just 24 hours. The feline, a Maine coon, got lost on her way back to New Zealand after staff at an airline mistakenly let her onboard during a return flight. Owner Margo Neas was shocked when she spotted Mittens after waiting for over a day. The cat, who had already traveled from Christchurch to Melbourne, ended up being returned home via a pet moving company. Air New Zealand reimbursed Ms. Neas for all travel expenses and apologized for the oversight.

While Ms. Neas didn’t pay for the return trip, she had originally paid $1,106 to have Mittens fly with her. Air New Zealand has since reimbursed her for all costs and apologized. The airline emphasized their commitment to treating all passengers—even furry ones—equally.

PEOPLE has also reached out to Move My Pet and Air New Zealand for further comment but hasn’t heard back yet.
