Scientists tracking a powerful radio signal from space have been shocked by its origin. The intense burst, known as a fast radio burst (FRB), was found to come from an old, dead galaxy with a unique shape—a discovery that defies previous understanding. This finding challenges assumptions about where these cosmic phenomena originate and suggests they may be linked to galaxies much older than previously thought.
The signal was first detected in February 2024 and tracked back to a galaxy approximately 11 billion years old and just two billion light-years away from Earth. Simulations suggest this galaxy is massive, with over 100 billion solar masses, making it the most massive host galaxy for an FRB identified so far.
This groundbreaking study, conducted by scientists at institutions like Northwestern University, highlights new insights into these perplexing cosmic events and their origins in some of the earliest galaxies in the universe.
