NASA will launch its second IM-2 lunar lander this month to demonstrate NASA technology and science on the Moon. The mission aims to explore lunar resources, improve understanding of space environments, and support future Moon exploration efforts. The IM-2 will be launched by a SpaceX rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, targeting Mons Mouton near the Moon’s South Pole.
Media access for the launch is available, with applications needed by Feb. 5 for international media and Feb. 12 for U.S. media. Those interested can apply for credentials via a provided link or email.
The IM-2 will carry NASA science instruments, including a drill and mass spectrometer to study subsurface materials. It also plans to demonstrate advanced communication systems and mobility solutions. Additionally, the mission includes an in-situ resource utilization demonstration using lunar samples.
This launch is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, which aims to reduce costs for Moon exploration by partnering with U.S. companies. CLPS is expected to support long-term Moon development through commercial payloads and services.
NASA has awarded contracts worth up to $2.6 billion for similar missions, including payload delivery and operations. For more information or press inquiries, contact NASA’s Kennedy Space Center at 321-867-2468 or via email.
