Chinese Car Giants Sue EU Over EV Tariffs

Chinese car companies BYD, Geely, and SAIC have sued the European Commission over anti-subsidy tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs). Tesla and BMW are also taking legal action following an EU investigation into China’s subsidies distorting the global EV market. The cases were filed in Luxembourg’s General Court last week, with companies challenging the basis for the duties imposed last year. The charges include questioning whether funds qualify as subsidies, how they were calculated, and their impact on Europe’s automotive industry.

The legal battle stems from a one-year investigation launched by the EU Commission in October 2023 into China’s EV sector. The probe concluded that widespread subsidies across the supply chain led to under-priced EVs being exported to Europe, endangering the sector’s health. BYD and Geely, along with their subsidiaries, faced tariffs of 17% and 18.8%, respectively.
