The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management announced the presence of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza in a non-commercial farm flock of about 40 birds in southern Washington County. To prevent the spread, DEM staff humanely euthanized the flock. No person-to-person transmission of H5N1 has been detected in the U.S., including Rhode Island, where residents have not reported any human cases either. Officials emphasize that the virus typically spreads via wild ducks and geese. While the public health risk remains low, RIDOH has been closely collaborating with DEM on preparedness measures and regularly engaging with healthcare professionals. Residents with exposure to birds or poultry are urged to wear protective equipment during such interactions. Rhode Island previously reported an H5N1 infection in a backyard flock in 2022.
