The Hughes Fire, spanning 10,425 acres, began burning in Castaic and Saugus earlier this week and reached 79% containment by Friday evening. Initially forcing tens of thousands to evacuate, the fire has grown rapidly from just 50 acres to over 5,000 within hours, displacing more than 30,000 residents. The cause remains under investigation.
The Angeles National Forest will remain closed through January 31 due to critical fire danger and public safety. Los Angeles County Fire Department officials confirmed that the fire has been moving toward the forest, allowing evacuation orders to be lifted for affected areas.
Firefighters worked tirelessly overnight to secure containment lines and address hot spots. Over 1,700 personnel from both agencies are continuing efforts as Santa Ana winds have ceased. Updates on evacuation orders can be found at bit.ly/3E78Ngj.
