Kamala Harris Mocks Trump on Saturday Night Live

US Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live (SNL) just days before the presidential election. Harris, who has been impersonated by Maya Rudolph on the show’s 50th season, appeared in the cold opening opposite Rudolph as they joked about Trump’s struggles with garbage trucks. The joke came after a viral video of Trump struggling to climb into a garbage truck in Wisconsin while wearing an orange fluorescent safety vest.

Harris made the unscheduled stop while on her way to Detroit, Michigan, and arrived at LaGuardia Airport in Queens via Air Force Two. She told Rudolph that she wished she could “talk to someone who has been in my shoes” before responding with a joke about Trump’s ability to open doors. The sketch was seen as a lighthearted moment ahead of the election, which is set to take place on Tuesday.

The appearance was met with criticism from the Trump campaign, which accused Harris of “cosplaying” and living out her “warped fantasy”. However, SNL creator Lorne Michaels denied that the show had approached any candidate due to FCC rules. This season’s cast includes Rudolph playing Harris, James Austin Johnson playing Trump, Jim Gaffigan taking on Tim Walz, and Andy Samberg portraying Harris’s husband Doug Emhoff.

Harris’s surprise appearance is not the first time SNL has had heavyweight political guests make cameo appearances. In 2007, President Barack Obama appeared alongside Hillary Clinton, Bob Dole, and George H.W. Bush, while Sarah Palin appeared weeks before the election in 2010. Donald Trump hosted the show in 2015 during his presidential campaign.
