Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live” just days before the presidential election, playing her own character alongside Maya Rudolph’s impression of her. The segment aired live at 11:30 p.m. and was the final episode of the show’s season.
Harris’ appearance was announced only moments before the show aired, with aides confirming the surprise stop after she arrived in New York City. She had stopped by Charlotte earlier that evening and then made an unscheduled landing at LaGuardia Airport. Harris taped her segment shortly after 8 p.m., just enough time for a quick rehearsal.
Rudolph’s portrayal of Harris has won critical acclaim, including praise from the vice president herself. In a recent appearance on ABC’s “The View,” Harris said Rudolph was “so good” and had accurately captured Harris’ mannerisms. The two shared several lines during the sketch, including Harris’ signature phrase “Keep Kamala and carry-on-ala.”
Harris is not the first politician to make an appearance on SNL. Former presidents Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, and Gerald Ford have all appeared on the show, often shortly before or after elections. Hillary Clinton also made multiple appearances, while Barack Obama and Sarah Palin both joined the cast in later seasons.
The visit was seen as a way for Harris to generate buzz and appeal to a wider audience, given that she has been campaigning heavily in battleground states ahead of the election.
