A recalled batch of Kirkland Signature smoked salmon sold at Costco has raised concerns over a potential ‘reasonable risk’ of listeria contamination, which could cause severe illness or death. More than 111 cases linked to the recall have been reported, with the U.S. FDA classifying it as the highest risk level (Class I), indicating a ‘reasonable probability’ of adverse health effects for consumers.
The salmon was sold in twin 12-ounce packs, with a sell-by date of November 13, likely still refrigerated or frozen when purchased. Consuming the product could pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups like newborns, the elderly, and pregnant women. Officials have urged affected consumers to dispose of the salmon immediately or request a full refund.
The FDA first announced the recall in late October but updated its risk classification this week. The contamination likely arose from routine testing, though the exact cause remains unclear. The recalled product has lot number 8512801270 and UPC code 096619256976. It was manufactured by Acme Smoked Fish Corporation in Brooklyn, New York, and previously faced a recall in 2021 due to salmonella contamination.
Salmon can become contaminated through contaminated machinery or water used during processing. The FDA also warned that while no cases linked to the salmon have been reported yet, listeria can spread through raw vegetables, unpasteurized dairy, and deli meats, leading to about 47 annual recalls. Listeriosis symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, with more serious complications possible if the infection spreads to the nervous system.
Approximately 1,600 people are infected with listeria each year, underscoring the gravity of this recall. This latest recall follows a 2021 beef and poultry recall due to listeria contamination, highlighting the ongoing risks for consumers.
