The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed multiple H5N1 avian flu cases in poultry from Arkansas, Maryland, Missouri, and Illinois. A commercial broiler farm near Cleveland County, Arkansas, reported 107,000 birds affected, while a facility in Dorchester County, Maryland, involved 152,000 chickens. In Missouri, turkey producers in Jasper, Lawrence, and Newton counties (totaling about 145,000 birds) also tested positive. Additionally, a farm in Cook County, Illinois, with 500 birds, was confirmed.
In dairy herds, APHIS reported seven new H5N1 cases, bringing California’s total to 720 and the nation’s tally to 937.
Snow geese deaths in Delaware prompted a joint effort between the USDA and ARD&E to collect sick and dead birds, aiming to curb virus spread. The region sees recent outbreaks in commercial poultry on Delaware’s Delmarva Peninsula. Officials stress that snow geese are wild birds migrating from the Arctic, complicating efforts to track the flu’s origin. They urge reporting of sick or dead birds through state authorities.
