Dark Horse Comics has canceled further publication of author Neil Gaiman’s “Anansi Boys” series after a storm of sexual misconduct allegations surfaced. The comic book company, based in Oregon, stated it will no longer publish his works due to these claims.
A New York magazine article earlier this month detailed allegations that Gaiman sexually abused and assaulted multiple women over several years. He has denied the claims in a statement, insisting he has never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone.
The publisher’s decision follows a wave of cancellations from other literary and publishing stakeholders. Gaiman’s first “Anansi Boys” comic book, an adaptation of his 2005 novel, was released in June but had been planned as an eight-part series. Seven parts have already been published.
The allegations began circulating last summer after women appeared on a podcast titled “Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman,” accusing him of sexual assault and abuse. Subsequent cancellations from the literary and publishing industries have been slower, though prominent publishers like HarperCollins have distanced themselves from Gaiman.
In an internal memo to its staff earlier this month, W.W. Norton’s president outlined the publisher’s decision to stop collaborating with Gaiman. Neither his lawyer nor his literary agent at Writer’s House has responded to comment.
