A first case of Avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in a commercial poultry flock in Pennsylvania, prompting the state to quarantine the farm. The infection was found at a 50,000-bird layer chicken flock in Leigh County, with efforts underway to contain the outbreak through a task force involving state and federal agencies. Preliminary samples indicate the presence of H5 strain 2.3.4.4, now under testing at a USDA lab. Pennsylvania’s Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding emphasized the importance of biosecurity measures across farms to prevent further spread. This marks the first detection since February 2024 in commercial poultry, following a backyard flock case in Venango County last year.
