India-China Flights Resume After Five Years

India and China have agreed to resume direct passenger flights between their two countries after five years of separation. The halt in flights began during the COVID-19 pandemic, but relations further soured over political tensions, leading to a permanent suspension until now. Both sides are working toward an “in principle” agreement for flight operations.

India and China have been at odds over several issues since 2020, including border disputes in the Himalayas, which led India to cut flights to mainland China. However, relations have gradually improved due to high-level diplomatic developments and cooperation within the BRICS bloc. Recent meetings between Indian and Chinese leaders have shown renewed commitment to improving bilateral ties, including restoring air connectivity.

Prior to the pandemic, there were around 500 monthly direct flights operated by India heading to mainland China. The resumption of flights is seen as a step toward normalizing relations after years of political antagonism.
