Flu Outbreak Warnings in Virginia After Two Child Deaths

After two Virginia children died from the flu, health officials are raising concerns about a potential dangerous flu season. The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported that the two young victims were between 5-17 years old. They emphasized that the flu season officially started in October and is expected to continue through April.

VDH director Lisa Sollot explained that the middle of flu season has already begun, with activity still rising. She stressed that reaching the peak may be possible this year. “We can keep them clean, wash our hands, stay home when sick, get tested, and choose healthy habits,” she said, encouraging vaccinations as a key measure.

Sollot also noted that only about 30% of Virginians have received their flu shots so far this season. Recent increases in flu cases at urgent care centers highlight the need for vigilance. High-risk groups like adults over 65, children with pre-existing conditions, and those with chronic illnesses should take extra precautions.

With several months remaining in the flu season, Sollot urged residents to get vaccinated if they haven’t already and to do so before it’s too late this year.
