Giorgia Meloni faces investigation following Italy’s unexpected repatriation of Libyan general Osama Najim, wanted by the ICC for war crimes. In a social media video, Meloni denied allegations of aiding and abetting crimes and embezzlement, claiming she is not blackmailed or intimidated. She accused Rome prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi of investigating her along with Carlo Nordio, Matteo Piantedosi, and Alfredo Mantovano.
Najim was repatriated after an Italian court granted a technical release warrant, despite the city’s attorney general later calling the arrest irregular due to lack of prior discussions with Nordio. Najim, wanted for crimes at Mitiga prison in Tripoli, was sent back after appearing dangerous according to his profile.
The case has sparked controversy over Italy’s handling of Najim and Meloni’s involvement in what some view as an attempt to silence her amid growing pressure from the far-right League party she leads.
